Library Maintenance

When to reindex the library

Use Library Settings → Reindex when:

  • Thumbnails are missing or stale after big Finder changes
  • New files do not appear even after Refresh
  • You copied thousands of images into an opened folder outside LunaFinder
  • Something feels “out of sync” with what is on disk

Reindexing is different from AI Search → Reindex All Images, which only rebuilds AI embeddings.

Requirements

Library Settings is available only when a folder is already open. If no folder is selected, the section shows as disabled until you use Open Folder.

What Reindex does

According to the in-app description, Reindex:

  • Rebuilds the library cache
  • Refreshes thumbnails for all images

A warning notes this may take a while on large libraries.

How to run it

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Expand Library Settings.
  3. Read the warning about duration.
  4. Click Reindex.
  5. Wait for progress notifications (indexing / thumbnails) to complete.

You can continue using the app, but performance may be slower during heavy reindexing.

Refresh vs Reindex

ActionScopeWhen
Refresh (toolbar)Current folder view + treeQuick update after small changes
Reindex (Settings)Full cache + all thumbnails in libraryDeeper rebuild

After reindexing

  • Browse normally and confirm thumbnails returned.
  • If you use AI Search, check indexed counts in Settings and run Reindex All Images only if semantic search still seems outdated.
